EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created in 1818, depicts a Coptic Christian man and woman from Egypt standing before the iconic pyramids. The image is taken from Mary Anne Venning's educational book, "A Geographical Present: Being Descriptions of the Principal Countries of the World," published by Darton, Harvey and Darton in London. Mary Anne Venning (1764-1842) was a prolific writer and educator of the Regency and Georgian eras, known for her works on geography, conchology, and mineralogy. In this particular publication, she aimed to provide her readers with a comprehensive understanding of the world's diverse cultures and geographical features. The Coptic Christian couple in the engraving are dressed in traditional Egyptian attire. The man wears a long, flowing robe, and a turban adorned with a feather, while the woman is clad in a long, flowing dress with a shawl covering her head. They are surrounded by various Egyptian motifs, including a lion, a fountain, and a bouquet of flowers. The pyramids, one of Egypt's most famous landmarks, serve as a striking backdrop to the scene. The intricate details of the engraving, from the intricate patterns on the couple's clothing to the delicate shading of the pyramids, showcase the skill of the engraver. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful and educational representation of Egypt and its people during the early 19th century.
