EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait graced the front cover of The Bystander magazine on November 19, 1923, featuring the enigmatic figure of Elsie Mackay, Lady Inchcape (1893-1928). Born into aristocratic British society, Elsie's life was a fascinating blend of glamour, adventure, and tragedy. Known in the social circles as Poppy Wyndham, she made headlines following her marriage to Dennis Wyndham, which ended in divorce in 1922. A talented actress, Elsie made her stage debut at the age of 18 in "The Three Sisters" at the Old Vic. Her acting career flourished, and she later turned her attention to interior decoration. However, her true passion was aviation. In 1928, she embarked on a daring transatlantic journey from East to West with her lover, Captain Hinchcliffe, in a Stinson Detroiter. Tragically, the plane disappeared over the Atlantic, and both Elsie and Captain Hinchcliffe were presumed dead. The Bystander's front cover image captures the essence of Elsie's charisma and spirit, showcasing her confident and alluring gaze. The photograph is a poignant reminder of a life cut short, leaving behind a legacy of intrigue and adventure. This portrait is an exquisite example of the captivating images that once graced the pages of The Bystander, offering a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy, famous, and infamous figures of the early 20th century.
