EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait captures the visage of James Montgomery (1771-1854), a renowned Scottish poet and writer, in the later years of his life. Born on July 18, 1771, in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, Montgomery is best known for his poetic works, including "The Poetical Works of the Late James Montgomery," published in 1854, the year this portrait was created. Montgomery's literary career began in 1793 when he published his first poem, "The Shepherd's Watch," in the "Irvine Herald." He went on to write hymns, ballads, and poems on various themes, including history, religion, and social issues. His most famous works include "The Poet's Recreation," "The Anguished Shouting of the Slaves," and "The Wanderer." Montgomery was also an advocate for social justice and human rights. He was a vocal critic of slavery and wrote extensively on the subject, including "The Slave's Lament," which was published in 1828. He was also a supporter of the Chartist movement, which advocated for political and social reforms for the working class. Despite his many accomplishments, Montgomery faced financial difficulties towards the end of his life. He died on December 31, 1854, in Sheffield, England, leaving behind a rich literary legacy. This portrait, created in his final year, serves as a poignant reminder of the life and work of this influential Scottish poet and writer.
