This striking portrait depicts Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811), a pivotal figure in Mexican history as both a priest and a leader of the Mexican War of Independence. The painting, executed in oil on canvas by the renowned artist Odilón García, captures Hidalgo's intense gaze and unwavering determination. Born in the town of Pangasofo in present-day Jalisco, Mexico, Hidalgo y Costilla began his religious career as a priest in 1778. He led a diverse army of peasants, indigenous people, and mestizos against the Spanish colonial forces. Although ultimately unsuccessful in his military campaign, Hidalgo's actions ignited the flames of revolution, inspiring other leaders such as José María Morelos and Augustín de Iturbide to continue the fight for Mexican independence.
