The image, taken in 1803, shows Barrington holding a quill pen, a symbol of his literary pursuits and the written account of his remarkable journey to New South Wales, Australia. Born in Ireland, Barrington's life took an unexpected turn when he was sentenced to transportation for a crime he did not commit. After arriving in New South Wales in 1797, he quickly rose through the ranks to become the superintendent of convicts. His tenure was marked by reforms aimed at improving the lives of the convicts and reducing recidivism. Following his departure from Australia in 1801, Barrington embarked on a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. There, he explored the region and made contact with the indigenous Khoikhoi people.
