EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the essence of the French infantry during the Napoleonic Wars, with three distinct branches of the foot soldiers represented: the fusilier, grenadier, and voltigeur. The soldiers are depicted in their full regalia, each uniform reflecting the specific role they played on the battlefield. In the foreground stands a fusilier, easily identified by his short, blue coat, white lapels, and red facings. Armed with a musket and bayonet, the fusilier was the standard infantryman of the French army, responsible for delivering volleys of musket fire against enemy lines. To the fusilier's left, a grenadier is shown. Grenadiers were larger, stronger men who formed the front rank of the infantry. Their distinctive uniforms, featuring red coats and white lapels, were designed to intimidate the enemy. Grenadiers were equipped with a musket and a grenade, which they would throw into the enemy ranks to cause maximum damage. On the right, a voltigeur is depicted. Voltigeurs were light infantry, wearing green coats and white lapels. They were trained to operate in open order, firing from the hip and moving quickly to evade enemy fire. Their role was to support the main infantry lines and harass the enemy flanks. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the uniforms and roles of the French infantry during the Napoleonic Wars, a period of intense military activity and innovation. The soldiers' determined expressions and smartly pressed uniforms convey a sense of discipline, pride, and readiness for battle.
