The Voltigeur, a formidable figure in the world of infantry, was an integral part of the Napoleonic era. With their distinctive campaign uniform, these soldiers were known for their agility and versatility on the battlefield. Often mistaken for dragoons or artillerymen due to their similar appearance, the Voltigeurs stood out with their unique attire. A handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard showcases a Hunter-Voltiger of Light Troops in his French light infantry uniform. This illustration is just one example from Paul Lacroix's historical costumes collection. In 1836, another lithograph depicted a Chasseur D Afrique alongside a Chasseur D Orleans Et Soldat D Infanterie De Ligne Voltigeur from 1840. These vibrant images capture the essence of this specialized soldier and highlight their role within different military units. Not limited to warfare alone, "Voltigeur" made its mark beyond the battlefield as well. In Doncaster Races' engraving commemorating the Dead-Heat for St Leger Stakes, "Voltigeur" competed against "Russborough, " with "Bolingbroke" securing third place. The chasseurs-voltigeurs also left an indelible impression at York Spring Meeting where they participated in various matches worth substantial sums of money. The engravings depicting these events showcase both the excitement and prestige associated with such competitions. Renowned artist M Edouard Detaille immortalized this iconic figure through chromolithographs that captured every intricate detail of a Voltigeur's uniform. His work serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of these soldiers even after years have passed since their active service. Whether it be during times of war or moments on civilian grounds like horse races or sporting events, voltigeurs always commanded attention and respect among both comrades and spectators alike.
