EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern yet resolute visage of Field Marshal Sir John French, one of the most distinguished military commanders of his time. Taken circa 1915, during the height of World War I, Sir John French stands proudly in military uniform, adorned with his many decorations and insignia, including the Order of the Bath and the Star of India. Born in 1852 in Cuneo, Italy, French served in the British Army for over forty years, with notable experience in the Boer War. He rose through the ranks, commanding the 1st Cavalry Division and later becoming the Chief of the Imperial General Staff. In 1914, Sir John French was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and led the British forces during the early stages of World War I. Despite the eventual failure of the Schlieffen Plan and the subsequent retreat from Mons, Sir John French remained committed to the defense of Belgium and France. He oversaw the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk in 1940, ensuring the safe return of over 300,000 troops. This photograph serves as a testament to the unwavering determination and leadership of Sir John French during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty. His legacy as a respected military commander continues to be celebrated, and this image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
