EDITORS COMMENTS
Dalian, China: A Snapshot of History at the Harbour and Railway Depot This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the bustling activity at Dalian Harbour and Railway Depot during the Japanese occupation of the city. Dalian, located in Liaoning Province, has a rich and complex history marked by various foreign influences. The settlement was first established by the British in 1858, but was later returned to China in the 1880s. In 1895, during the first Sino-Japanese War, Dalian was occupied by Japan, and the city remained under Japanese rule until the end of World War II. The image showcases the quay side teeming with activity, with steam ships docked at the wharf, and the railway terminus in the background. The railway played a significant role in Dalian's development as a major port city, facilitating trade and transportation between China and other parts of the world. The warehouses along the quay are filled with goods, reflecting the city's importance as a trading hub. After Japan's unconditional surrender in 1945, Dalian was liberated by the Soviet Union, who governed the city until 1950. The city was then presented to the Chinese Communist government without any compensation. This photograph offers a glimpse into a time when Dalian was a contested territory, and the railway and harbour were key elements in the city's strategic importance. The historical significance of this image extends beyond its aesthetic value, providing a window into the complex political and economic history of Dalian and China as a whole.
