EDITORS COMMENTS
Claudius Galen, the renowned Greek physician, is depicted in this bust sculpture. Born in Pergamon, Asia Minor around 129 AD, Galen's medical career flourished primarily in Rome during the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, from approximately 161 to 199 AD. Galen's association with the Roman court began when he was appointed as the personal physician to Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher-king. Later, he continued to serve under Commodus, the infamous gladiator emperor. During this time, Galen not only treated the Roman elite but also tended to the gladiators, demonstrating his extensive medical knowledge and versatility. The bust reveals Galen's intellectual and thoughtful demeanor. His groundbreaking theories on the concept of 'humours' significantly influenced the medical world. Humours were believed to be the essential fluids that governed the health and wellbeing of an individual. Galen identified four primary humours – blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile – and believed that an imbalance of these humours could lead to various health conditions. Galen's works, which number over 500 titles, are considered foundational texts in the history of medicine. His contributions to anatomy, pharmacology, and therapeutics were instrumental in shaping the medical practices of the ancient world and beyond. This stunning bust serves as a testament to Galen's enduring legacy as a pioneering physician and a pivotal figure in the history of medicine.
