EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting depicts the Cerura vinula, commonly known as the puss moth or southern flannel moth. Created in circa 1831 by the talented British naturalist and artist, Elizabeth Davy (1780-1836), this artwork is a stunning example of the intricate details and vibrant colors that characterized the botanic illustrations of the time. The Cerura vinula is a member of the Megalopygidae family, which is also known as the tiger moths or flannel moths. This moth is notable for its distinctive appearance, with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters and a body covered in fine, white hairs that resemble fur. The female moth, as depicted in this painting, has large, feathery antennae and a more robust body than the male. The Cerura vinula is native to the southern United States and Central America. It is often found in wooded areas, particularly near trees such as the tree aspen or tulip poplar. The moth's larvae, or caterpillars, are known as processionary worms, as they move in a procession-like fashion when disturbed. They feed on the leaves of various trees, including the tree aspen, oak, and hickory. Elizabeth Davy was a pioneering woman in the field of natural history illustration. She was a prolific artist who produced numerous works on various insects, moths, and butterflies. Her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to capture the essence of her subjects made her a respected figure in the scientific community of her time. This beautiful watercolor painting of the Cerura vinula is a testament to her artistic skill and her passion for the natural world.
