EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a treasured memento from the past, a card sent by the Queen Alexandas Field Force Fund to Lt Col Frank Hercules Walker of the 7th Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment during his service at Gallipoli in 1915. The card, dated November 1915, was among the comforts and tokens of support sent to the troops by the charity, which was established by Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, to provide aid and assistance to soldiers and their families during World War I. Lt Col Walker, a highly respected and experienced officer, had joined the North Staffordshire Regiment in 1899 and saw active service in the Second Boer War. In 1915, he was appointed Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 7th Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment, and was sent to Gallipoli to take part in the Allied campaign against the Ottoman Empire. Tragically, he was killed in action on 7 January 1916, during the Battle of Helles. The card, now a precious keepsake for the Walker family, bears a simple yet heartfelt message from the Queen Alexandas Field Force Fund, expressing gratitude for the soldiers' service and offering words of encouragement and support. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served during World War I, and the comfort and support provided to them by organizations like the Queen Alexandas Field Force Fund.
