Bude light
A large Bude light in Trafalgar Square. Invented by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney and patented in 1839, the light worked by introducing oxygen gas into the middle of a standard oil lamp flame. The unburned carbon in the oil flame burned incredibly brightly and an intense, white light was produced from the weak, yellow flame of the oil lamp. A single Bude light was used to light Gurneys castle (in Bude, Cornwall) using a set of prisms and reflectors

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph depicts a large Bude Light, an innovative invention by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, illuminating Trafalgar Square in London. Dating back to 1839, the Bude Light was a groundbreaking improvement on traditional oil lamps. Gurney, a Cornwall native, patented this invention by introducing oxygen gas into the middle of a standard oil lamp flame. The unburned carbon in the oil flame burned incredibly brightly, producing an intense, white light from the weak, yellow flame of the oil lamp. The Bude Light was first used to light Gurney's castle in Bude, Cornwall, employing a set of prisms and reflectors to maximize its illuminating power. This single, large Bude Light, now on display in Trafalgar Square, showcases the historical significance of this invention that revolutionized the way we produce light. Sir Goldsworthy Gurney's Bude Light is an intriguing piece of history that marks a pivotal moment in the development of lighting technology. Its impact can still be seen today, as we continue to strive for more efficient and effective ways to light our world."
