EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), an English statesman and writer, as he is depicted in the engraving by the Flemish engraver and publisher, Theodor De Bry. More is shown wearing the distinctive black robe and white fur collar of a Privy Councillor, signifying his high-ranking position in the English court. The intricately detailed hat, adorned with ermine and other symbols of nobility, further emphasizes More's status. More is best known for his role as Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII, a position he held from 1529 until his resignation in 1532. It was during this time that More famously refused to acknowledge King Henry as the Supreme Head of the Church of England, leading to his eventual trial and execution for treason in 1535. A prolific writer, More is also renowned for his works of literature, including "Utopia," a seminal text in the history of political thought. The book, published in 1516, describes an ideal society and has been influential in shaping political and social thought throughout history. This print, created in 1535, is a testament to More's enduring legacy as a figure of political and literary significance in English history. The intricately detailed engraving captures the essence of More's character and the historical context of his time, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical prints or studies of English history and literature.
