EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble countenance of John Fane, the 10th Earl of Westmorland (1759-1841), an esteemed statesman and lord-lieutenant of Ireland during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born on February 25, 1759, Fane was the eldest son of the 9th Earl of Westmorland and Lady Anne Cavendish. He was educated at Eton College and the University of Cambridge before embarking on a distinguished political career. Fane's political ascent began in 1780 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Newport in Shropshire. He quickly gained a reputation as a capable and dedicated representative, and in 1784, he was appointed as a Lord of the Treasury. In 1793, Fane was appointed as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held until 1801. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to maintain order in the country, which was then experiencing significant political and social unrest. Fane's tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was marked by his commitment to reform and his efforts to improve the lives of the Irish people. He oversaw the implementation of several important reforms, including the establishment of the Irish Constabulary and the creation of the Irish Board of Works. Fane's reforms helped to lay the foundation for a more stable and prosperous Ireland. After leaving Ireland, Fane continued to serve in various capacities in the British government, including as Postmaster General and as a member of the Privy Council. He was also a prominent figure in London society and was known for his patronage of the arts. This portrait, which dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, captures the dignity and intelligence of a man who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of both Ireland and Britain during a time of great change. The Earl of Westmorland's legacy continues to be felt in both countries, and this portrait serves as a reminder of his important contributions to history.
