The Preussen DAR_P01
The German schooner The Preussen, run aground in St Margarets Bay, Kent. The Preussen was the largest sailing vessel in the world at the time of her loss in November 1910. She collided with the SS Brighton on the morning of 06 November 1910. She managed to anchor off Dungeness, but the cables parted and she was driven out to sea. Tugs then towed her towards Dover, but she ran ashore off St Margarets Bay. Between 04-11 January 1911 gales caused her to break in two. Photographed in November 1910 by Annette Evelyn Darwall

The Preussen - A Majestic Sailing Vessel's Tragic End
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Annette Evelyn Darwall in November 1910, we witness the haunting remains of "The Preussen" a German schooner that met its untimely demise in St Margarets Bay, Kent. Once hailed as the largest sailing vessel worldwide, this majestic ship fell victim to an unfortunate collision with the SS Brighton on a fateful morning - 06 November 1910. Despite managing to anchor off Dungeness initially, fate had other plans for The Preussen. As her cables eventually gave way under relentless forces of nature, she was mercilessly swept out into the vast sea. Desperate attempts were made by tugs to tow her towards Dover; however, destiny had already sealed her tragic end. Ultimately driven ashore off St Margarets Bay, The Preussen found herself at the mercy of fierce gales during January 1911. These unforgiving winds proved too much for her weakened structure and caused her to break apart entirely over a period between 04-11 January. Annette Evelyn Darwall's poignant photograph immortalizes this once grand symbol of maritime prowess now reduced to fragments upon the desolate shores. It serves as a somber reminder of both man's triumphs and his vulnerability against nature's wrathful might. This remarkable image stands as a testament not only to The Preussen but also to all those who have perished at sea throughout history
