EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in London's history - the demolition of Waterloo Bridge. Designed by John Rennie and opened in 1817, this iconic bridge stood as a symbol of architectural brilliance for over a century. However, as progress marched on, it became necessary to make way for a new structure. Taken during the 1930s, this image showcases two diligent men hard at work beneath a towering girder. These laborers are tasked with dismantling a temporary steel framework that had been erected in 1925 to support the bridge during its final years. Their dedication and expertise are evident as they carefully disassemble the intricate structure piece by piece. The demolition of Waterloo Bridge marked the end of an era and paved the way for modernization. Although bittersweet, it allowed for progress and innovation to flourish within Greater London. The old Georgian road bridge made room for its successor which was built in the 1940s. Charles William Prickett skillfully captured this historic moment through his lens, preserving not only an architectural marvel but also paying homage to those who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes. This print serves as a reminder of our ever-changing urban landscape and stands testament to human ingenuity and adaptability throughout time.
