EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'War with Guelders, plate 5 from Historical Scenes from the Life of Emperor Maximilian I,' was created by the German artist Wolf Traut around 1520. The image depicts a pivotal moment in the Gelders Wars, a series of conflicts between Emperor Maximilian I of Austria (1459-1519), also known as Kaiser Maximilian I, and Charles II, Duke of Gelders (1467-1538), also known as Charles II, Duke of Guelders. Maximilian I, seen here on horseback at the front line, wears a full suit of armor and holds a banner bearing the Habsburg double-headed eagle. Behind him, his army readies for battle, with men of various ranks and nationalities, including Dutch and German soldiers, forming a disciplined front line. The opposing forces, led by Duke Charles II, are seen advancing in the distance, their flags unfurled. The print is part of a larger series of historical scenes from the life of Emperor Maximilian I, which was produced for the Triumphal Arch in Innsbruck, Austria, between 1515 and 17. The series is notable for its intricate calligraphy and Latin text, which can be seen in the banners and letters throughout the print. The Gelders Wars were a significant part of Maximilian I's reign, and this print offers a glimpse into the military tactics and visual culture of the time. The image also highlights the importance of the Habsburg dynasty in European history and the role of Maximilian I as a powerful and influential monarch.
