Using a laryngoscope to aid the removal of a polyp from the throat, c1890

Using a laryngoscope to aid the removal of a polyp from the throat, c1890. A small mirror on a long metal handle was invented in 1854 by a Spanish singing teacher Manuel Garcia (1805-1906) to study the vocal chords. In 1858 Ludwig Turck (1810-1868) and Johann Czermak (1828-1873) both published papers on the use of the instrument, but Czermak invented a headband mirror to throw light onto the laryngoscope mirror, and so on the throat. From Les Grands Maux et les Grands Remedes (The Principal Illnesses and Their Remedies) by Jules Rengade. (Paris, c1890)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Using a laryngoscope to aid the removal of a polyp from the throat, c1890. This print captures a significant moment in medical history, showcasing the use of a laryngoscope during a delicate procedure. Developed in 1854 by Manuel Garcia, an innovative Spanish singing teacher, this small mirror on a long metal handle was initially designed for studying vocal chords. However, it was Ludwig Turck and Johann Czermak who further advanced its application. In 1858, they published papers introducing improvements to the instrument. Czermak's ingenious invention included a headband mirror that illuminated the laryngoscope mirror and provided better visibility into the throat. This engraving from Jules Rengade's 'Les Grands Maux et les Grands Remedes' (The Principal Illnesses and Their Remedies) offers us insight into medical practices of the late 19th century in France. The image showcases not only scientific progress but also highlights collaboration between talented individuals such as Johann Czermak, Ludwig Turck, and Manuel Garcia. With vibrant colors and meticulous detail, this print transports us back to an era where medical innovation played an essential role in improving patient care. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding and treating ailments related to the human body. As we admire this remarkable piece from Oxford Science Archive's collection at Heritage Images, let us appreciate these pioneers who paved the way for modern medicine through their dedication and ingenuity.
