The Song of the Sou Wester, illustration from Drakes Drum and Other Songs of the Sea, 1905 captures the spirit of maritime adventure and resilience. In this vividly colored lithograph by Arthur David McCormick (1860-1943), we are transported to a choppy sea where a fleet of ships battles against the elements. Inspired by Henry Newbolt's famous sea shanty, 'The Song of the Sou Wester, ' this artwork depicts a young boy playing with his boats as they sail towards treacherous waters. The scene evokes a sense of rough weather and strong winds, symbolizing both danger and determination. The South Westerly wind blows fiercely as waves crash against the ships, testing their strength and resolve. It is amidst such tempestuous conditions that Sir Francis Drake's legendary drum holds significance. Drake's Drum, carried throughout his historic circumnavigation voyage, now rests at Buckland Abbey. Legend has it that if England were ever in peril, its rhythmic beats would summon Drake back to defend his homeland. This folklore adds an air of mystique to an already captivating image. McCormick skillfully brings this tale to life through his vibrant use of color and attention to detail. His illustration transports us into an era when sailing was not just a means for exploration but also a testament to human courage in face of adversity. 'The Song of the Sou Wester' print serves as a reminder that even amidst stormy seas and challenging times, there
