Piet Cronje, Boer leader and soldier, surrendering to Lord Roberts, Paardeberg, South Africa, 1900. Cronje (1835-1911) fought against the British in the 1st Boer War and defeated the Jameson raiders at Krugersdorp, on 29 December 1895. In the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902) he defeated the British at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899. After his surrender to the British Cronje was imprisoned on the island of St Helena until the end of the war
