EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Lucius Carey, Viscount Falkland, a prominent English author and politician from the mid-19th century. Painted by Henry Thomas Ryall, this portrait is based on an original work by Anthony van Dyck, which is held in the collection of The Right Honourable Lord Arundell of Wardour. Viscount Falkland played a significant role in English history as he sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1642. He fought alongside King Charles I during the English Civil War on the Royalist side and tragically lost his life at the First Battle of Newbury on September 20th, 1643. The image showcases Falkland's aristocratic stature and noble presence. Clad in silk fabric with intricate details captured by Ryall's engraving technique, it emphasizes his status as both a statesman and soldier. His piercing gaze reflects determination and conviction. This print serves as a reminder of Falkland's contribution to politics during turbulent times. It immortalizes him within history while paying homage to Sir Anthony van Dyck's artistic genius. As we observe this portrait today, we are transported back to an era where men like Viscount Falkland shaped nations through their words and actions.
