Keir Hardie speaking at a peace rally in Trafalgar Square, London, 2 August, 1914. James Keir Hardie (1856-1915) was a Scottish trade unionist and politician. A founder member of the Labour Party, he served as Member of Parliament for West Ham from 1892-1895 and Merthyr Tydfil from 1900-1915. As well as championing wokers rights, he was also a prominent supporter of the suffragettes campaign for votes for women. A pacifist, Hardie was vehemently opposed to the First World War and unsuccessfully attempted, in collaboration with socialists in other countries, to organise a general strike to stop the conflict. He spoke against the war at demonstrations across Britain and supported the stance of conscientious objectors

EDITORS COMMENTS
Keir Hardie, a prominent Scottish trade unionist and politician, passionately addresses the crowd at a peace rally in Trafalgar Square on 2nd August 1914. This powerful print captures the essence of Hardie's unwavering commitment to pacifism during one of the most tumultuous periods in history. As a founding member of the Labour Party and an advocate for workers' rights, Hardie was also an ardent supporter of women's suffrage. His dedication extended beyond domestic issues as he vehemently opposed Britain's involvement in the First World War. In his quest for peace, Hardie collaborated with socialists from other countries to organize a general strike aimed at halting the conflict. Although unsuccessful, he continued his fight against war by speaking out at demonstrations across Britain and lending support to conscientious objectors. The photograph showcases Hardie's commanding presence as he stands before a sea of attentive faces. With his iconic beard and pointed finger emphasizing each word spoken, it is evident that his message resonated deeply with those who listened intently. This image serves as a poignant reminder of Keir Hardie's legacy as both statesman and socialist leader. It encapsulates not only his opposition to war but also his unwavering dedication to championing equality and justice for all.
