EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Fete in Hamstead Park, Berks, 1858: A Feast for the Soul and Stomach This photograph from the annals of history transports us back to a grand day out in Hamstead Park, Berks, in 1858. The scene is set for a monumental picnic, with Hamstead Park's expansive grounds admirably calculated to accommodate the thousands who had gathered for a day of amusement and charitable giving. The Great Western Railway played a pivotal role in bringing together the crowds, with approximately 3000 people traveling from Hungerford and Newbury, and an additional 1000 from London. It is estimated that a staggering 10,000 people were in attendance on this glorious day. The plateau of Hamstead Park was adorned with commodious marquees arranged in a semicircle, providing shelter and respite from the elements. Four bands of music entertained the masses, adding to the festive atmosphere. The private gardens of the mansion were also thrown open to the visitors, inviting them to wander through the many gay parterres, terraces, and greenhouses of those extensive and well-kept grounds. The bill of fare for this grand event was nothing short of impressive, with an abundance of salmon, 200 couples of fowl, 200 couples of ducks, about 70 hams, 30 huge rounds of beef, 8 lambs, 300 veal and pigeon pies, and an unknown number of dishes of salads etc. To quench the thirst of the attendees, 70 barrels of beer and porter were on the ground, along with wines, bottled ales, porter, tea, coffee, 30 gallons of milk, and cream. It is clear that there was no lack of the grand essentials to an Englishman's holiday. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when community, charity, and the simple pleasures of food and music came together to create a day of unforgettable joy.
