The fierce battle, fought in Georgia from September 18th to 20th, resulted in a staggering number of casualties exceeding 34,000. In this historic moment frozen in time, we witness General Hood on horseback, embodying bravery and courage as he led his troops into combat. General John Bell Hood was renowned for his fearless leadership and personal involvement on the battlefield. The monochrome composition adds depth and intensity to this powerful depiction of war's toll on both man and animal. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of the sacrifices made by soldiers like General Hood but also by their loyal steeds who carried them through countless battles. Through this wood engraving preserved by Ann Ronan Pictures, we are transported back to the turbulent nineteenth century when our nation was divided by conflict.
