The Capture of Marovoay by the French, Madagascar, 19th-20th century
The Capture of Marovoay, Madagascar, 1895. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in what became known as the first Franco-Hova War (Hova being the name of the islands Merina aristocrats), seeking to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents. Prior to the French intervention Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty, but after the war, increasing French interference meant another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896 France ruled the island as a protectorate, the monarchy had been abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of "The Capture of Marovoay by the French" in Madagascar during the late 19th and early 20th century. The image showcases a significant event from the first Franco-Hova War, which began when France invaded Madagascar in 1883. Seeking to restore confiscated property belonging to French residents, this conflict marked a turning point for the independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty. As depicted in this lithograph, we witness an advancing group of French soldiers dressed in their military uniforms and pith helmets. They are seen storming through the countryside towards Marovoay's fortification, symbolizing their determination to establish dominance over this African nation. The scene is filled with tension and action as men engage in battle amidst buildings that once stood as symbols of independence but now serve as obstacles against colonialism. This print not only portrays a historical conquest but also represents larger themes such as imperialism and power struggles between nations. By 1896, after enduring another war known as the Second Franco-Hova War, France had successfully turned Madagascar into its protectorate. The monarchy was abolished, leading to exile for members of the royal family who were sent to Algeria. This powerful image serves as a reminder of both triumphs and losses experienced throughout history while shedding light on Africa's complex relationship with European colonial powers during this period.
