The Arch Berg from Within, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

The Arch Berg from Within, c1910– 1913, (1913). The Terra Nova framed in an ice cave. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Arch Berg from Within" captures the essence of the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, this image showcases the Terra Nova ship framed within an enchanting ice cave. Scott's ambitious British Antarctic Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. The team consisted of various experts in fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; Scott reached their ultimate destination on January 17th in 1912. However, their joy was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to it a month earlier. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later along with poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. This profound photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition" series captured by Ponting for Volume I published in London in 1913. It serves as a powerful reminder of both human determination and nature's unforgiving beauty encountered during one of history's most significant polar expeditions.
