Abergeldie Castle, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Abergeldie Castle, [in Aberdeenshire, Scotland], 1850. The castle is...situated immediately on the banks of the river [Dee], and, approached by the high-road from Aberdeen, seems, as it were, closed in by the mountains at the foot of which it rests, and thus appears to be isolated; though, in fact, it stands in the midst of the valley, and may be seen from the private grounds of Balmoral, almost buried in the deep masses of the woodlands which intervene...Abergeldie Castle has been taken for a term by her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, who is now sojourning there, within sight of the Highland home of her illustrious daughter [Queen Victoria]. Mr. James Browne, in his "New Deeside Guide, " describes Abergeldie as a very stately and ancient castle, which was long in the possession of the Gordons, one of the oldest and most honourable families in Aberdeenshire...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Abergeldie Castle, situated in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, along the banks of the River Dee, is a stately and ancient fortification that appears isolated and closed in by the surrounding mountains. Approached by the high-road from Aberdeen, the castle seems to rest at the foot of the mountains, though it actually stands in the midst of the valley. The private grounds of Balmoral offer a glimpse of Abergeldie from a distance, almost hidden among the deep masses of woodlands. In 1850, Abergeldie Castle was taken for a term by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, who resided there with a view of Queen Victoria's Highland home. The castle, which was once in the possession of the Gordons, one of the oldest and most honorable families in Aberdeenshire, is described by James Browne in his New Deeside Guide as a very ancient and stately castle. The print of Abergeldie Castle, created in 1850, offers a glimpse into the rural landscape of the time. Agricultural workers, dressed in their rustic attire, can be seen tending to the land, while a horse-drawn vehicle makes its way along a country road. The castle, with its towering walls and fortifications, stands proudly against the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. Abergeldie Castle, a symbol of the region's rich history and rural life, continues to be a popular tourist destination and a reminder of Scotland's past. This engraving, from the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Victorian era and the rural landscape of Aberdeenshire.
