EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Victorian two-day marine chronometer with a Hartnup balance, dating back to around 1870. Crafted by the renowned Charles Frodsham of London, this exquisite timepiece is currently held in a private collection. The chronometer is beautifully presented within a mahogany and brass mounted box, featuring unique inset hinges and brass drop-down handles. A repairer's label from January 1948 can be found pasted inside the second section, indicating that it was cleaned by Lilley & Reynolds Ltd. , located at 9 Railway Place in London. The dial of this remarkable piece displays silvered Roman and Arabic numerals, bearing the signature of Charles Frodsham along with his address on Strand Street in London. Notably, the dial also features an elegant garter inscribed "By Appointment to the Queen" at X o'clock and Gold Medals of Honour at II o'clock. The blued steel hands add a touch of elegance to this already impressive design. At its core lies an intricately crafted movement with spot-finished plates joined by four ringed pillars. This movement incorporates maintaining power to the single chain fusee system for enhanced accuracy. The escapement boasts an Earnshaw-type spring detent with a blued steel helical spring supporting Hartnup's bi-metallic balance. Overall, this photograph captures not only the beauty but also the historical significance of this Victorian marine chronometer - truly a masterpiece that stands as testament to Charles Frodsham's exceptional craftsmanship.
