EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph taken by Jim Hancock in January 1971 showcases the Aust Services, a large service station located at the English end of the iconic Severn Road Bridge in Aust, South Gloucestershire. Serving as a vital pit stop for travelers on the former route of the M4 motorway, this bustling hub was an essential part of transportation infrastructure for over three decades. Opened in 1966, the M4 motorway played a crucial role as the main arterial route to South Wales until its closure after the inauguration of the Second Severn Crossing in 1996. This print captures a moment frozen in time when Aust Services was at its peak, catering to countless motorists and offering them respite during their journeys. The image reveals an expansive view from above, showcasing rows upon rows of parked cars and trucks surrounding this significant transport landmark. The intricate network of roads leading to and from Aust Services highlights its strategic location within England's road network. Although no longer operational today, this historic photograph serves as a reminder of how pivotal Aust Services once was. It stands as a testament to our ever-evolving transportation system and provides us with valuable insights into our past.
