On the mournful morning of January 23, 1901, King Edward VII (1841-1910) departed from Osborne House, his beloved family residence on the Isle of Wight, following the passing of his mother, Queen Victoria (1819-1901). The new monarch was accompanied by a small group of trusted advisors and family members, including the Duke of York (later King George V), the Duke of Connaught, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, and the Duke of Argyll. Their somber procession marked the beginning of a new era in British monarchy. Queen Victoria's reign, which had spanned over 63 years, had come to an end, leaving her son to assume the throne at the age of 60. Edward VII, a man known for his love of life and his extensive European connections, was initially reluctant to ascend to the throne, but duty called. With a heavy heart, he left Osborne House to begin his reign in London. The group's first order of business was to hold the Accession Council, where Edward VII was formally proclaimed as the new monarch. The council, which was held at St. James's Palace, marked the formal beginning of Edward VII's reign and the start of a new chapter in British history. This poignant image captures the moment of transition, as the new king and his advisors leave Osborne House, bound for London and the duties that awaited them.
