EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the mass exodus of an estimated 30,000 people following the British Expedition to Abyssinia in 1868. The expedition, also known as the Punitive Expedition against King Theodore, was a response to the monarch's imprisonment of British missionaries and representatives of the British Government. After the British forces, led by Sir Robert Napier, bombarded the fortress of Magdala and defeated the Abyssinian army, King Theodore is believed to have taken his own life. In this poignant scene, thousands of men, women, and children from Theodore's defeated army are seen in flight, carrying their meager possessions and livestock. The image, published by Illustrated London News in December 1868, is a testament to the human cost of the conflict and a significant moment in the history of Anglo-Abyssinian relations. The haunting image, with its vast expanse of people and their determined expressions, offers a glimpse into the past and the hardships endured during this pivotal moment in history.
