Once upon a time in the enchanted world of Charles Perrault's beloved fairy tales, the cunning and resourceful Puss in Boots came to the rescue of his master, the Marquis Carabas. In this illustration by Charles Folkard, dated 1923, we find the Marquis in a perilous predicament, drowning in a swift-moving river. Fear not, for Puss in Boots, with his quick wit and clever disguises, is on the scene. The Marquis, a kind and generous nobleman, had once saved Puss's life, and in return, the cat vowed to protect him. As the Marquis' horse, Puss donned a pair of magical boots that made him appear as a handsome and wealthy marquis, allowing him to win the heart of the beautiful Princess Leonore. With his newfound status, Puss was able to secure a marriage proposal for his master, ensuring the Marquis' happiness and prosperity. However, when the Marquis' enemies threatened to ruin his newfound success, Puss once again came to the rescue. In this illustration, we see the Marquis in distress, his horse and servant unable to save him from the treacherous current. But never fear, for Puss in Boots is close behind, ready to use his cunning and resourcefulness to save the day.
