Once upon a time in the enchanted world of Charles Perrault's beloved fairy tales, the cunning and resourceful Puss in Boots came to the rescue of his master, the Marquis Carabas. In this illustration by Charles Folkard, dated 1923, we find the Marquis in a perilous predicament, drowning in a swift-moving river. Fear not, for Puss in Boots, with his quick wit and clever disguises, is on the scene. The Marquis, a kind and generous nobleman, had once saved Puss's life, and in return, the cat vowed to protect him.
