According to the account in Mark 5:1-13 and Matthew 8:28-34, Jesus encountered a man possessed by many demons, living among the tombs outside the city. The demons, filled with torment, cried out and caused the man to cut himself with stones. Jesus, undeterred, approached the man and commanded the demons to leave him and enter a herd of nearby innocent pigs. The demons obeyed, and the pigs, filled with the demons, rushed down a steep hillside and drowned in the lake. This historical event, which is believed to have taken place in the first century AD, is a significant miracle attributed to Jesus in Christian tradition. The image of demons leaving a human host and entering animals is a common motif in ancient literature and mythology, and this event has been depicted in art throughout history.
