This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in the Battle of the Golden Spurs, also known as the Battle of Kortrijk or the Battle of Courtrai, which took place on July 11, 1382. The image portrays Philip van Artevelde, a Flemish leader, rallying his countrymen against the invading French army. The event is considered a turning point in the Franco-Flemish War, as the Flemish forces, despite being vastly outnumbered, managed to inflict a decisive defeat on the French, securing a significant victory for Flemish independence. Philip van Artevelde, a wealthy merchant and a skilled military leader, had emerged as a champion of Flemish resistance against the French. In this print, he is depicted in full armor, brandishing a sword and urging his men on with a passionate speech. The determination and courage in the faces of the Flemish soldiers are palpable, as they prepare to face the French army, which looms in the background, advancing towards them.
