The image portrays Philip van Artevelde, a Flemish leader, rallying his countrymen against the invading French army. The event is considered a turning point in the Franco-Flemish War, as the Flemish forces, despite being vastly outnumbered, managed to inflict a decisive defeat on the French, securing a significant victory for Flemish independence.
