EDITORS COMMENTS
Silenus, the Nurse and Companion of Dionysos, or Bacchus, in a Revelry Moment (Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1618-1620) This print, brought to us by the renowned Flemish Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, depicts the mythological figure of Silenus, an attendant and companion of Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, fertility, and revelry, also known as Bacchus. Silenus, often portrayed as a satyr, is shown here in a jovial moment, surrounded by the lush foliage and wild abandon of a Bacchic revelry. The image captures Silenus in the act of drinking from a large, ornate cup, his face contorted in pleasure and his body supported by two satyrs. One satyr, with a mischievous grin, pours wine into the cup, while the other, with a protective hand, steadies Silenus. The scene exudes an air of merriment and hedonistic indulgence, reflecting the free-spirited nature of Dionysian festivities. Silenus' role as a nurse to Dionysos is not explicitly depicted in this print, but it is an essential aspect of his mythology. In some stories, Silenus was said to have found the infant Dionysos abandoned in a vineyard and raised him as his own. The bond between the two is a testament to the deep connection between the god of wine and his loyal companion. Rubens masterfully captures the essence of the mythological tale, using rich colors, bold brushstrokes, and intricate details to bring the scene to life. The print is a testament to the enduring appeal of classical mythology and the timeless allure of the god Bacchus and his entourage.
