EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Russian battleship Tsarevich, named after the heir to the Russian throne, anchored at Toulon, France in 1903. The Tsarevich, also known as Tsesarevich, was built in France and launched in 1900, with her commissioning taking place the following year. This impressive warship served a significant role in the Russo-Japanese War in the Pacific Ocean, where she transported troops and supplies. After the war, she was deployed in the Baltic Sea during the First World War. The Tsarevich was a formidable vessel, with a displacement of over 12,000 tons and armed with a main battery of twelve 12-inch guns. In 1917, her name was changed to Grazhdanin, meaning Citizen, reflecting the political changes taking place in Russia at the time. The ship was decommissioned in 1918, marking the end of her illustrious career in the Russian Imperial Navy. The image of the Tsarevich at Toulon showcases her majestic presence on the tranquil waters, with a plume of smoke rising from her funnel. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the history of naval warfare and the role of this remarkable battleship in shaping the political landscape of the early 20th century.
