EDITORS COMMENTS
November 1809: Preparing for the Ras Al Khyma Attack - A Historical Moment in the Straits of Hormuz This evocative print captures a pivotal moment in the long-standing conflict between the British forces and the pirates of Ras Al Khyma, a notorious pirate town situated on the eastern coast of the Persian Gulf, in the Straits of Hormuz. The image, dated 1809, portrays British soldiers and sailors readying themselves for an imminent attack on the pirate stronghold. The pirates of Ras Al Khyma, also known as Ras Al Khaimah, had long posed a significant threat to the British shipping lanes in the region, which were crucial for the transportation of valuable goods between Europe and the Indian subcontinent. The British East India Company, determined to protect its commercial interests, had launched several military campaigns against the pirates throughout history. This particular attack, led by British forces under the command of Major-General John Malcolm, aimed to put an end to the piracy once and for all. The print depicts the soldiers and sailors, dressed in their uniforms and armed with muskets and swords, boarding their ships in preparation for the assault. The ominous clouds in the background hint at the impending storm, adding an element of danger and uncertainty to the scene. The Ras Al Khyma attack of 1809 was not the only time the town was targeted by the British forces. The pirates continued to pose a threat, and the town was attacked again in 1812 and subsequently. These historical events underscore the enduring struggle between the British and the pirates in the region, a struggle that shaped the political and economic landscape of the Persian Gulf and the wider Indian Ocean world.
