November 1809: Preparing for the Ras Al Khyma Attack - A Historical Moment in the Straits of Hormuz This evocative print captures a pivotal moment in the long-standing conflict between the British forces and the pirates of Ras Al Khyma, a notorious pirate town situated on the eastern coast of the Persian Gulf, in the Straits of Hormuz. The image, dated 1809, portrays British soldiers and sailors readying themselves for an imminent attack on the pirate stronghold. The pirates of Ras Al Khyma, also known as Ras Al Khaimah, had long posed a significant threat to the British shipping lanes in the region, which were crucial for the transportation of valuable goods between Europe and the Indian subcontinent. The British East India Company, determined to protect its commercial interests, had launched several military campaigns against the pirates throughout history. This particular attack, led by British forces under the command of Major-General John Malcolm, aimed to put an end to the piracy once and for all.
