Born on February 3, 1836, in the Dominican Republic, Gomez rose to prominence as a military leader in the fight for Cuban independence from Spanish rule. In 1895, Gomez led the second Cuban revolution, known as the War of Independence or the Little War, as the previous uprising in 1868, the Ten Years' War, had been suppressed. The photograph shows Gomez in the heat of the campaign, dressed in military uniform, with a map spread out before him, planning the next strategic move against the Spanish forces. Gomez's leadership was instrumental in the revolution's success, and he is often referred to as the "Father of the Homeland" and the "Liberator of Cuba."
