Born on February 3, 1836, in the Dominican Republic, Gomez rose to prominence as a military leader in the fight for Cuban independence from Spanish rule. In 1895, Gomez led the second Cuban revolution, known as the War of Independence or the Little War, as the previous uprising in 1868, the Ten Years' War, had been suppressed.
