This evocative oval portrait captures the enigmatic and complex character of Mary Tudor, the Catholic Queen of England, also known as Bloody Mary. Mary, born in 1516, was the eldest daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. After her half-sister, Elizabeth I, came to the throne following Henry's death, Mary was forced into exile in Europe. She returned to England in 1553, following the death of Edward VI, and was crowned queen in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Mary's reign was marked by her efforts to restore Catholicism to England, after the Protestant Reformation under her brother and sister.
