EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative oval portrait captures the enigmatic and complex character of Mary Tudor, the Catholic Queen of England, also known as Bloody Mary. Mary, born in 1516, was the eldest daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. After her half-sister, Elizabeth I, came to the throne following Henry's death, Mary was forced into exile in Europe. She returned to England in 1553, following the death of Edward VI, and was crowned queen in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Mary's reign was marked by her efforts to restore Catholicism to England, after the Protestant Reformation under her brother and sister. Her persecution of Protestants earned her the nickname "Bloody Mary," as hundreds were burned at the stake for heresy. However, this portrait shows a more human side of Mary, with a gentle smile playing on her lips and a fur-trimmed, intricately decorated ruff collar adorning her neck. The head dress, adorned with delicate trimmings, adds to the regal elegance of the image. Despite the controversies of her reign, Mary Tudor remains an intriguing figure in English history. Her story is one of power, faith, and determination, as she navigated the complex political landscape of 16th-century Europe and sought to reclaim her birthright as queen of England. This portrait offers a glimpse into the personal side of this complex and fascinating monarch, reminding us of the human stories that lie behind the historical record.
