This photograph captures Sir John Wolfe-Barry (1836-1917), the esteemed British civil engineer, in the later years of his illustrious career. Known for his groundbreaking achievements in engineering, Wolfe-Barry is most famously recognized for his design and construction of the iconic Tower Bridge over the River Thames in London. Constructed between 1886 and 1894, the bridge is an architectural marvel that continues to captivate visitors to this day. Its distinctive bascule design, which allows the bridge to open to allow the passage of tall ships, was a revolutionary concept at the time. The bridge's construction marked a significant milestone in engineering history, and Wolfe-Barry's innovative design has stood the test of time. Born in 1836, Wolfe-Barry began his engineering career in the mid-19th century, working on various projects in the UK and abroad. He was knighted in 1897 for his services to engineering.
