Wilton Crescent, London

A fine photographic postcard view of Wilton Crescent in London. Number 2, Wilton Crescent SW, belonged to the Chetwode Family. Lady Chetwode (the owner of the house) was married to Field Marshall Philip Walhouse Chetwode, 1st Baron Chetwode, 7th Baronet of Oakley, GCB OM GCSI KCMG DSO. (1869 - 1950) and their daughter married John Betjeman, later to become Poet Laureate. Investigation of the reverse of the card suggests that young Lil (the sender of this particular card) worked as a servant to the Chetwodes. Another famous resident of this London street was Lord Mountbatten of Burma who lived on Wilton Crescent in the 1960s
