The fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and the beginning of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmed II. With Rhodes as the last major stronghold of the Western powers in the Eastern Mediterranean, it became a prime target for the expanding Ottoman Empire. The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of St. John, had been defending Rhodes since 1309 and were renowned for their military prowess and unwavering commitment to protecting the Christian faith. Eventually, the Turks, having suffered heavy losses, were forced to retreat.
