This evocative print depicts a pivotal moment in the rich history of Rhodes and the Knights Hospitaller, as the Turks, having conquered Constantinople in 1453, set their sights on the fortified island city of Rhodes in July 1480. The fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and the beginning of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmed II. With Rhodes as the last major stronghold of the Western powers in the Eastern Mediterranean, it became a prime target for the expanding Ottoman Empire. The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of St. John, had been defending Rhodes since 1309 and were renowned for their military prowess and unwavering commitment to protecting the Christian faith. As the Turkish forces, led by Grand Vizier Gedik Ahmet Pasha, began their siege, the Knights Hospitaller, under the leadership of Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson, prepared for a fierce defense. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Knights Hospitaller held out against the relentless Turkish assaults for over four months. The city's fortifications, combined with the Knights' strategic military tactics, proved to be a formidable challenge for the Turks. The siege of Rhodes was a testament to the Knights Hospitaller's heroic resistance and their unwavering commitment to defend Christendom. Eventually, the Turks, having suffered heavy losses, were forced to retreat. The successful defense of Rhodes not only secured the safety of the Christian population but also delayed the Ottoman conquest of the Eastern Mediterranean for several decades.
