In the early 19th century, a penniless Prince Regent, later King George IV, found himself in a dire financial situation. In a desperate attempt to raise funds, he pawned one of his most valuable possessions - a gold watch - at this very pub. The Castle's pawnbroker, recognizing the significance of the item, held onto it until the King's fortunes improved. As a token of gratitude, King George IV later granted the pub the exclusive right to operate as a pawnbrokerage, a tradition that continues to this day. The Castle, fronted by a red brick facade, exudes an inviting atmosphere with its ornate wooden sign and warm, welcoming glow. The pub's Victorian architecture is a testament to the era's grandeur, with intricate details adorning the building's front.
